January 15, 2016 By //  by Gorman Insurance

space heatersIt’s been quite chilly lately, which means many of you are probably relying on space heaters to stay warm. It is important to be extra vigilant when using space heaters. Here are some helpful space heater safety tips.

  1. Look for Safety Features
Modern space heaters have added safety features such as auto-shutoff. This can prevent overheating and are typically more efficient.
  2. Check Annually
Inspect your space heater regularly. Look for frayed wires or signs that something may be wrong. It is best not to use a space heater with damaged wires or parts.
  3. Never Leave Heaters Unattended
Space heaters should not be left running while you are away from home. Be cautious of leaving it running while you are sleeping as well. Should it malfunction, you should be nearby to quickly address it.
  4. Be Aware of Surroundings
When placing your heater in a room, take a moment to look around you. Are there any flammable items nearby? Is anything likely to fall on top of it? Keep heaters a safe distance from any type of textile such as curtains, blankets, and even sofas.
  5. Think About the Kids
Space heaters can be a real safety danger for young children. Newer heaters with safe-to-touch surfaces are best for households with children. Avoid heaters with scalding metal surfaces.
