What to Do If You Get Into an Auto Accident | MA Driving Tips

January 7, 2016 By //  by Gorman Insurance

injury3Do you know what to do if you get into an auto accident? When an accident occurs, it can be difficult to think clearly. Knowing what to do ahead of time can help you better handle the situation should one occur. Here are some helpful tips as part of our MA Driving Tips series.

Exchange Information

When involved in any type of accident, be sure to get the information for other individuals involved. Exchange driver’s license and insurance information for other drivers. If there are any witnesses, it may be a good idea to also get their contact information.

Take pictures

If possible, take pictures of both the scene and the vehicles involved. This may be helpful if a lawsuit results from this accident. Pictures help detail important aspects of the crime scene including the weather, visibility, and landscape.

Call Local Police

If the accident is more than a very minor one or if there are any special circumstances (such as you suspecting that the other driver is under the influence), its a good idea to call the local police. They will often get statements from all parties involved and prepare a police report. They may also add their own notes/comments about the accident that may be helpful later.

Get Medical Attention

If you are injured in an accident, obtain immediate medical attention. You may not realize the severity of your injuries due to the initial shock of an accident. Your health and well being is the most important thing, so play it safe.

Contact Your Insurance Company

Make your insurance company aware of the accident. You will likely be asked to fill out an accident report with your account of the events before, during, and after the accident. Be as detailed as possible while the events remain fresh in your memory. Your insurance company will provide you with helpful guidance on what you may need to do next (such as getting your vehicle repaired).

More on What to Do If You Get Into an Auto Accident

What to do if you get into an auto accident will vary somewhat based on the severity of the accident and the circumstances surrounding it. It is possible that a lawsuit will result from your auto accident. For any type of legal questions, it is important to consult with a local attorney who specializes in the field. The above steps are just a few important ones that you should remember for any accident in Massachusetts.
